Gardening Jobs for January

Hello January

Find out what to do in your garden, allotment and greenhouse in January, with our handy, 'Simon says'.

• When you’ve had enough kisses under the mistletoe, press the berries into apple tree bark to start your own colony of mistletoe and create a ‘kissing tree’!

• Move dormant plants this month if they’re in the wrong place.

• Buy certified seed potatoes and start the chitting process on 1st earlier.

• Sow hardy annual plants.

• Ventilate greenhouses when temperatures allow.  Don’t trust a sunny start to the day, the temperature can be below freezing even though the sun makes us feel warm, so always check your thermometers before opening the vents.

• Pour warm water into bird baths on freezing days, to give the birds a chance of hydrating themselves.

• Place new nesting boxes as soon as possible to get the birds used to them being there and give them time to see if they’d like to move in!

• Feed the birds regularly.

• Sharpen your gardening tools.

• Fleece half-hardy plants when frosts are forecast.
