Gardening Jobs for September

Posted: 31 Aug 2023

Hello September!

Simon, our garden centre manager, has put together a list of September gardening jobs to do before Autumn arrives.

• Plant spring bulbs such as Daffodils, Crocus, Hyacinths and Bluebells.

• Leave sunflower seedheads in place for the birds to feed on.

• Remove shading from glasshouses.

• Start a new compost heap with the leaves that have fallen early.

• Create a new lawn from turf or seed. Autumn weather is favourable for good lawn establishment.

• Mix grass seed with lawn dressing and scatter thinly over bare and thin patches in existing lawns.

• Start to reduce the frequency of houseplant watering.

• Bring in houseplants that have had an outdoor holiday during the summer.

• Plant new trees and shrubs to allow them time to get their roots in to see them through the winter.

• Plant Pansies, Violas and wallflowers in tubs or in the soil.

• Clean out your greenhouse to reduce risk of pests and diseases next year.

• Keep feeding summer bedding to get a couple more months of flowering going.

• Cut away any leaves covering pumpkins, squash and marrows to help the skins ripen in the sun.

• Plant onion sets now for spring cropping.

• Harvest and store chilli peppers.  Either freeze them or sow the tops together and hang in a dry place.

• Divide herbaceous perennials to keep plants healthy & vigorous for next year.
